Lucid builds some of the most technically impressive electric vehicles on the road. But it’s a young automaker with a small service network, and owners of the Lucid Air and Lucid Gravity have reported recurring problems. If your Lucid keeps returning to the service center for the same defect, you may have a lemon on your hands.
What Makes a Lucid a Lemon in California?
California’s Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (the “Lemon Law”) covers new vehicles with defects that substantially impair their use, value, or safety, and that the manufacturer can’t fix after a reasonable number of attempts. In general, a vehicle is presumed to be a lemon when, within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles:
• A serious safety defect has been repaired unsuccessfully two or more times.
• Another substantial defect has been repaired unsuccessfully four or more times.
• The vehicle has been out of service for more than 30 cumulative days.
Even outside that window, you may still have a valid claim. Your repair records are the key evidence.
The Most Common Lucid Problems
1. Software, Screen, and Electronics Failures
This is the most-reported category for the Lucid Air. Owners describe center and lower screens freezing, rebooting, or going black, along with slow app and in-car UI boot-up [1]. Over-the-air updates have improved things for many cars, but a glitch that keeps returning after repeated repair attempts is the kind of pattern a lemon claim is built on.
2. Rearview Camera Failures
Blank or laggy rear camera images show up across both models. The Lucid Gravity has a documented rearview camera blank-screen issue in reverse (NHTSA 26V018) [2], and similar camera problems have affected 2022–2025 Air models [1]. A camera that fails while backing up is a safety issue, which can strengthen a lemon claim.
3. Seat and Seat Belt Defects (Gravity)
Recent recalls on the Gravity raise real safety concerns:
• A seat bracket failure that can increase the risk of injury in a crash, covering certain 2025–2026 Gravity vehicles [3]
• An insufficient weld that may prevent a seat belt from properly restraining a passenger [4]
• Incorrect front seat backrest covers that may block side airbag deployment (NHTSA 25V855) [2]
4. Drive Unit, Inverter, and Powertrain Faults
Some Lucids have been recalled for issues that can cut power to the wheels. One recall involved an inverter that could fail on certain Air Pure rear-wheel drive models, causing a sudden loss of power [5]. Others have involved wiring harness problems and improperly secured half-shaft bolts [1]. Loss of drive power at highway speed is the kind of defect that can qualify as a serious safety issue.
5. Keyless Entry and Key Fob Problems
Owners of the 2025 Gravity have reported “key not detected” alerts since launch [6]. A car that sometimes won’t recognize its key may seem minor, but repeated failures to start or unlock affect use and value.
6. Defrost, Climate, and Cold-Weather Issues
A coolant heater failure on some 2022–2024 Airs can leave the windshield unable to defrost properly [1]. Poor visibility is a safety problem.
7. Build Quality and Long Repair Waits
Some owners report rattles, door alignment issues, and parts delays. Lucid’s service network is limited and scheduling lead times can be long [1], which matters because every day your car sits in the shop counts toward the 30-day threshold.
How Reliable Is Lucid Overall?
Independent ratings are not flattering. Consumer Reports predicts the 2026 Gravity will be less reliable than other new cars [3], and the Air line has a predicted reliability score of around 31 out of 100 [1]. Many owners have trouble-free experiences, but if yours is one of the problem cars, you have legal rights.
What to Do If You Think Your Lucid Is a Lemon
1. Keep every repair order. Make sure each visit lists your complaint, even if the dealer says “could not duplicate.”
2. Track days out of service. Note drop-off and pick-up dates.
3. Report safety defects to Lucid directly in writing, and keep a copy.
4. Don’t wait. Lemon law claims are subject to deadlines.
5. Talk to a lemon law attorney. Under California law, a manufacturer that loses can be required to pay your attorney’s fees, so a consultation typically costs you nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does California’s lemon law cover Lucid vehicles?
Yes. The Song-Beverly Act applies to new vehicles sold or leased in California, including electric vehicles from any manufacturer, Lucid included. Coverage can also extend to certified pre-owned vehicles still under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Does the Lemon Law cover leased or used vehicles?
It can. Leased vehicles are covered, and used vehicles can qualify under some consumer protection statutes depending on the warranty status. The vehicle must have been purchased or leased at retail in California.
What is Lucid’s warranty?
Typical terms are 4 years/50,000 miles basic coverage, and 8 years/100,000+ miles on the high-voltage battery and drive units [1]. Check your own paperwork, since terms can vary by model year and trim.
How many repair attempts does Lucid get?
For a serious safety defect, two attempts can be enough. For other substantial defects, four attempts is the typical benchmark. A vehicle in the shop for more than 30 cumulative days can also trigger the presumption.
Do software problems count?
They can. If a software or electronics defect substantially impairs the car’s use, value, or safety and isn’t fixed after reasonable attempts, it may qualify. Over-the-air updates that don’t permanently fix the problem don’t erase your claim.
Does a recall mean my car is a lemon?
Not automatically. A recall fixed on the first visit is normally not a lemon. But if the recall repair fails, the problem returns, or the car spends a long time out of service, it can support a claim.
What can I recover?
In general, you may be entitled to a repurchase or replacement. A repurchase can include your payments, down payment, and certain fees, minus a usage offset. A knowledgeable attorney can tell you what applies to your situation.
What if my dealer says there’s no problem?
Insist the visit is documented on the repair order anyway. A “could not duplicate” entry still counts as a repair opportunity.
Does it cost anything to find out?
Most lemon law firms, including ours, offer a free case evaluation, and manufacturers can be required to cover attorney’s fees on successful claims.
Is my claim time-limited?
Yes. California has deadlines that depend on your warranty and when the defects occurred, and procedures have changed recently. Contact an attorney as soon as problems start.
