Ford Motor Co. has instructed dealers worldwide to stop delivering and demonstrating approximately 300,000 Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers due to a battery issue that can prevent the doors from unlocking.
In the U.S., Ford is recalling 196,911 Mach-Es from model years 2021 to 2025. According to a dealer notice dated June 16 and obtained by Automotive News, an unexpected discharge of the 12-volt battery can cause the electronic front door latches to remain in their last locked or unlocked position. This malfunction can leave occupants locked out or trapped inside the vehicle.
Ford spokesperson Mike Levine confirmed the issue affects an additional 120,000 Mach-Es globally, including 32,569 in Canada. He noted that there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to the defect. “A software update is coming soon to address this recall,” Levine said in a statement following The Detroit News’ report.
Separately, Ford also announced a recall of 276 U.S. Mach-E vehicles from the 2025 model year due to defective park rods that could increase crash risk. Dealers were instructed not to deliver or demonstrate those vehicles as well. A repair bulletin is expected in the third quarter.
Ford has faced ongoing quality control challenges. It led the auto industry in total recalls in three of the past four years, ranking second behind Stellantis in 2024. As of mid-2025, Ford again tops the recall list with 76 so far, according to NHTSA.
Despite the setbacks, Mach-E sales rose 11% in May and are up 2.8% year-to-date, even as Ford’s overall EV sales have declined 8.3% in 2025.
